Military Suicides Up Among Soldiers in Repeat Army Tours

From the invasion of Afghanistan something about skilluntil last summer, the U.S. military had lost 761 soldiers in combat there. But a higher number in the service - 817 - had taken their own lives over the same period. happy new yearThe surge in suicides, which have risen five years in a row, has become a vexing problem for which the Army's highest levels of command have yet to find a solution despite deployingmy code here hundreds of mental-health experts and investing millions of dollars. And the elephant in the room in much of the formal discussion of the problem is the burden of repeated tours the love of my lifeof combat duty on a soldier's battered psyche. The problem is exacerbated by the manpower challenges faced by the service, because new research suggests that repeated combat deployments seem to be driving the suicide surge. The only way to apply the brakes will be Computer Technologyto reduce the number of deployments per soldier and extend what the Army calls "dwell time" - the duration spent at home between trips to war zones. But the only way to make that possible would be to expand the Army's troop strength, or reduce the number of soldiers sent off to war.See pictures of an Army town's struggle with PTSD."It's frankly frustrating that with the level of effort that we've put out there, that we haven't stemmed the [suicide] tide," General George Casey, the Army's top officer, told a House panel March 23. When pressed by a lawmaker the previous month on whether the Army was getting closer to solving the challenge, Army Secretary John McHugh was blunt. "Sadly, the answer is not much closer," he told the Senate Armed Services Committee Feb. 23. "As to why people take this step - particularly as to why men and women in uniform do - we're still in many ways befuddled." Befuddled and frustrating are not words routinely deployed by Army leaders. But the service's suicide rate continues to rise (it doubled between 2001 and 2006) while remaining flat in the civilian population, even when adjusted to reflect the Army's age and gender. Last year, 160 active-duty soldiers killed themselves, up from 140 in 2008 and 77 in 2003. In order to get a better grip on the causes of the problem, the service has issued new orders telling its commanders how to conduct future suicide investigations so that they are consistent across the board, spokesman Gary Tallman says. The directive's stated goal is to pinpoint "the circumstances, methods and contributing factors surrounding the event" in hopes of generating "clear, relevant and practical recommendation(s) to prevent future suicides." measures such as an incubator. Also, it codifies your best frienda state rule that the required second opinion on whether late-term abortions are necessary come from doctors in Kansas.Attempts to restrict abortion across the country aren't unusual — in Oklahoma, for example, new laws on abortions have been approved this year including a ban on abortions based on the gender of the child and tighterjourney restrictions on the use of the RU-486 abortion pill.South Dakota voters in 2006 and 2008 turned down proposals to ban abortion outright.
Nebraska's law barring abortions after across the ocean20 weeks is sure to be challenged in court. Carhart has suggested he might do so. In January, he told The Associated Press, "they can pass any law they want to ... and sped millions of dollars to go to court and lose."
A spokesman for Carhart said this poemlifeweek that he has no plans to leave Nebraska, but is exploring his options and isn't ruling out a move to Kansas.
The switch from viability to fetal pain I love applein justifying abortion limits raises fresh legal issues.bortion opponents say a 2007 U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding a federal ban on certain late-term abortions opens the door for such legislation because it suggests states have an interest in protecting fetuses. They also say new studies and testimony from doctors prove fetuses feel pain at 20 weeks.
The argument used to justify the 20-week ban is based on the testimony of some doctors, some of it given during a 2005 congressional hearing. They contend there is substantial evidence that by 20 weeks, fetuses seek to evade stimuli in a way that indicates they are experiencing pain.
"The Nebraska Legislature has taken a bold step which should ratchet up the abortion debate across the nation," Nebraska Right to Life director Julie Schmit-Albin said. "What we didn't know in 1973 in Roe versus Wade ... we know now." The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, however, says it knows of no legitimate evidence that fetuses experience pain at that stage.
"There is certainly no solid scientific evidence establishing that a fetus can perceive pain at these earlier stages, so any court decisions to uphold such broader laws could only do so by disregarding the importance of good scientific evidence," said Caitlin Borgmann, a law professor at The City University of New York. The U.S. Supreme Court would have to overturn earlier abortion-related rulings to uphold the Nebraska law, Borgmann said, including a 1992 ruling in Planned Parenthood v. Casey that upheld the right of women to have abortions before fetuses were viable.

Cancer risk of chemicals in the environment uncertain

their potential role in causing cancer, according to a new report from the President's Cancer Panel released Thursday.Government and industry should invest much more money in researching the potential risks of such chemicals — and that research should be done before the chemicals come into wide use, not after large numbers of people have been exposed to them, the report said. The report makes few concrete recommendations, said the panel chairman, Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr. of the Howard University College of Medicine. "Everyone said, 'Please, whatever you do, make sure any definitive statement is based on evidence,' " he said, and that evidence simply isn't available yet.
"I think one of the major things to come out of this report will be an improvement of consumer awareness" of the number of potential risks people may be exposed to, he said.
Reaction to the report was mixed.
"We agree that there are many important issues here … but a reader would come away from this report believing that pollutants cause most cancer," said Dr. Michael Thun, emeritus vice president of epidemiology at the American Cancer Society. In fact, he said, most cancers are caused by tobacco, alcohol, overexposure to ultraviolet light, radiation and sexually transmitted infections. The report "presents an unbalanced perspective" of the relative importance of these various factors, he said.
Thun also took issue with a statement in the report that said the true burden of environmental pollutants is "grossly underestimated."
That, Thun said, is the view of some "but by no means a clearly established fact."
Elizabeth M. Whelan, president of the American Council on Science and Health, whose views often coincide with industry's, noted that despite the growing exposure to chemicals in the environment, "cancer death rates are going down. The so-called environmental trace levels of chemicals play no role whatsoever in the etiology of cancer."
But Julia G. Brody, executive director of the Silent Spring Institute, formed 15 years ago to investigate environmental links to breast cancer, noted that much of the decrease in cancer rates is because of reduced smoking. Breast cancer rates have remained steady, while hormonal cancers, testicular cancer, children's cancer and brain cancer are increasing, she said.

BJ's takes a bigger slice of casual-dining market

It's happy hour at the new BJ's in Culver City, and Eric Gordon is sitting at the restaurant's packed bar section, taking big bites of a barbeque chicken pizza and glancing now and then at the Angels game on a massive flat-screen TV overhead.
Two to three times a week, Gordon, 21, finds himself at the casual-dining chain, his new go-to place for eating out. He likes the "chill" atmosphere and the 18-page menu of pizza, burgers, pastas, desserts and signature handcrafted beers. And in this economy, he especially likes the price. It is better

successful

I have heard a lecture made by an Internet manager who was successful in designing nike running shoes on Internet. He didn’t major in computer. He liked drawing. His wife was a skillful computer operator. Once he found the pictures on Internet, an idea sprouted out: “Why couldn’t I draw pictures on the nike trainers?” His wife quite supported his idea, and helped him to learn computer knowledge. Finally, he succeeded. In the end of the lecture, he said: “If you have an interest, and endow it activated meaning, you will be successful.”What is the meaning of “activated”? Only having interests is not enough. Jim became a brewer not like his father and grandfather, for he improved the quality of the beer, and was brave to promote sale of the new brand beer. That is, he didn’t stay in the same place where his father stayed. He applied his wisdom into the undertaking, and brought about his dreams. So “cheap nike shoes” means to put one’s distinctive ideas in the enterprise of his interest, and use strength to prove its value. Therefore, we should not only find our interests, but also make them activated, then we will, someday, stand on the top of success.Life is very long, so don’t rush to make decisions. Find your interest, and activated it. Life will favor everybody.

How to construct great software

In this article I'm going to explain the top 10 software development fallacies my company avoids. By avoiding these myths and concentrating on excellence, we are able to make great quality software.
Myth 1) Software must be designed in detail before development starts, so that a clear plan can be out-layed.

The truth) The more complex a design, the more like software the design itself is. By perfecting a design, then writing the software to that design, you're effectively writing the work twice. Instead, by doing just some simple design sketches and data modelling rather than a book-like design, a good development team can create a shell for the software and efficiently refine it towards the finished product. This process of refinement creates natural prototypes, allows easy adaptation when issues that would be unforseen by a design arise (or brought up as fresh concerns by a client), and the total process takes significantly less time. To pull this off requires a close team, skill, and experience, but it is by far the best option for the majority of situations.

Myth 2) There are programmers, designers, analysts, and users.

The truth) By structuring development so that all developers get some exposure to each part of the development process, skills may be shared and greater insight may be gained. If developers are encouraged to actually use the software then they can use that expertise to think of improvements that otherwise would not come to light.

Myth 3) A happy team is a productive team.

The truth) A team of people with a wide variety of natural skills, experience and concern, that criticises each other and argues vehemently over the smallest details, will bring up and resolve issues that otherwise would never be tackled. A furnace of relentless argument is the best way to forge understanding and reach perfection.

Myth 4) It's important we understand our direction and don't compromise with it.

The truth) Life is compromise, and compromise is not a weakness. There will always be issues (such as efficiency, budget, ease-of-use, power, scope, and the need for easy internationalisation) that cannot be simultaneously met without such compromise.

Myth 5) We know what the client wants, we know what the issues are.

The truth) Without constant re-evaluation, it is easy to lose track of the objective. Developers are often faced with problems to solve that they consider the issues, when those are in fact separated from the actual market goals and can become totally irrelevant. Developers must always understand the market goals and be able to adapt when other things change, or even the goals themselves change.

Myth 6) Bigger is better. Features are cool.

The truth) Features can easily confuse users, and their actual value should always be considered against the cost of confusion. In some cases it is sensible to actually remove working features due to such concerns.

Myth 7a) The customer is always right.

The truth) Most customers try hard not to look ignorant in front of software developers, and hence phrase their suggestions in a technical way. The effect is that often suggestions aren't really appropriate, because they're not founded on a solid understanding of technical issues.

Myth 7b) The customer is often wrong.

The truth) Although customers needs are often not best met by doing literally what they say, they always know what they want and why they want it - and usually for very good reason. Understand them and adapt what they say, discuss with them, but never ignore them.

Myth 8) Comment your code a lot.

The truth) Good code needs hardly any commenting, because sensible uses of naming and white-space are better alternatives. Comments should only ever explain the non-obvious, or provide standard API documentation.

Myth 9) Such and such is needed, such and such is great.

The truth) A bad workman blames his tools. Whilst some development tools aid development substantially, a good developer can do great results in most things served to them. There are a few exceptions, like Microsoft Access, or assembly language, but generally speaking the difference in quality results is much more due to the skills of the developers than the quality of their tools.

Toady

For the historical record I report the scheming,
It has liberated me, for the staff at work are accumulating.
The tardy work suppressed our feelings,
There were bookings and beginnings.
The toady is occurring to our sense
As we obviously begin with the consequence.
I report the scheme the toady endeavours,
I am actually happy with the actors.
A beggar of work is this toady,
He needs to be sacked for everyone absurdly.

quite

quite agree with ponycqu. make sure what u really want!
some of my students asked me to suggest them which discipline is easier for them to pass.i sometime will ask them which one do u like best?
if u r quite sure about what u want such kind of question is no more a question to u.if the postgraduate is just a help to earn a living, that's quiet easy to say have it or not.if it is a personal desire that's easy also.
so to be or not to be is the question for hamlet the man with hesitation with kowning what he realy wants.

ponycqu

make sure what you really want! man is the key factor ,not the enviroment. someone can learn more through his work than in the campus. everyone has the especial road. the most important thing is to find out which one is yours. I became a postgraduat one year ago. I was wandering the days if I chose to work all the time. I had to admit that the past year was not a happy memory. I know the basic question is on myself, but the education quality in the college, especiallly the education for postgraduates, is too poor. well, it's different if you are interest in study and research. do not look the postgraduate education as the grantee for work.
